SU Governance & Representation

The Union's governing body is the Union Council. It has representatives from all Schools and Departments within the University. It passes the policies that direct the activities of the Union and holds elected officers such as the Sabbatical Officers to account.

The Union Council, formerly known as the SRC, also debate on issues such as the ban on the Armed Forces being present at our Freshers' Fayre and whether the Union President should wear red nail varnish to all SRC meetings!?

Due to the size of the Union some areas are delegated to the standing sub-committees of the Union. The sub-committees of the Union are:

Executive Committee

• is responsible for the management of the Union's services and resources and is the employer of the Union.

Finance & Services Committee

• oversees the Union's finances and the development of new and existing commercial services.

Education & Welfare

• Committee is the forum where issues surrounding education and welfare provision (by both the University and the Union) are discussed from the student perspective.

Sports Arena and Societies Forum

• are the representative bodies for participants in sports and societies (respectively). They also have the sub-committees of Sports Committee and Societies Committee.

If you consider Union Council to be like the 'Parliament' of the Union then the Executive Committee should be considered to be the 'Cabinet'. The Executive Committee consists of the Sabbatical Officers of the Union, part-time Executive Officers responsible for specific and general groups within the University, and representatives from Union Council. It also has a number of standing sub-committees.

These are:

Entertainments Committee

• provides student input into the Entertainments the Union puts on.

Editorial Committee

• is there to ensure that Union publications do not infringe Union policy or the law.
  Disciplinary Committee is the forum where complaints against student members are heard.

Joint Negotiating Committee

• is a consultative body, which meets to discuss matters relating to substantive terms and conditions of employment issues.

RAG Committee

• runs the charitable fundraising element of the Union.

The Union also provides the student representation on many of the University's bodies and committees. We have representatives on the governing body of the University (University Council), the supreme academic body within the University (Senate) and many more committees such as ones that are responsible for library and computer facilities.
