Matthew Chester, PhD Student in Engineering Systems
Candidate for Postgraduate Officer: My Manifesto

I have been studying at City for seven years – as an undergraduate and, currently, as a postgraduate student. I spent the second year of my undergraduate degree at Syracuse University in New York State, which made me aware of how important it is to integrate domestic and international students, and value their diversity and experience.

In my view, university life has two discrete elements: academic life and social life, but common to both elements is the need for networking. I understand that their weighting will vary from student to student, but enhancing these areas of university life for postgraduate students is my goal and hope will be my legacy. To achieve this, I have two main intentions, should I be elected onto the Executive Council.

To enhance the academic experience for postgraduate students, my intention is to ensure that research and study will not be jeopardised by the library’s move away from using Athens as its primary academic resource. To enhance the social aspect of postgraduate life, my intention is to create a postgraduate community that will facilitate social and professional networking across all schools and departments.

Although I would dearly love to abolish student fees and make every night pound-a-pint night in the union, these kinds of promises are unrealistic and unachievable. I feel that it is paramount that my promises to you, the postgraduate student, must be attainable. Therefore, I promise to put measures in place to realise both of my intentions and I promise to encourage inter-departmental communications, at an executive level, in recognition of the need and importance for cross-disciplinary skills as professionals in business.

I am standing for postgraduate officer for two reasons. Firstly, I have been inspired by the new Vice Chancellor’s student learning initiative and felt that my seven years of student learning could be put to good use. The second reason is that I have realised that the majority of the postgraduate students I know are engineers, yet this is only a small proportion of the community I inhabit. Outside of university, I have friends from many disciplines and we share interests in the Arts, literature and politics which I feel has enriched my life – as postgraduate students, in a culturally diverse university like City, I believe that your student experience should an enriching one.

By voting for me, you too are recognising the need for enhancing communication between university schools and departments, and you will secure opportunities to develop your personal and professional life, now and in the future.
