Students Union Elections, Did You Notice?
The Students Union elections took place a couple of weeks to fill the positions of sabbatical officers for the academic year 2008/2009. But it seems that the student community did not really notice that the students union actually had any elections. This was represented by the fact that only 1,081 people actually took the time to complete the ballot paper. The reason I know that only 1,081 people voted is because I ran for the prestigious role of President, unfortunately I did not get the position due to fact that Team City had a much larger backing. I offer my congratulations to the President elect Nikhil Raj-Cumlajee and wish him the best of luck for his new role.
But there are important issues than the sabbatical officers; it seems that the union has faded into the background while the university has taken student politics into its own hands. The union is an independent body that represents the views and opinions of the student community, the fact that such a small proportion of individuals voted in the elections is a serious issue for the individuals who have been elected to be the new sabbatical officers from August.
The union is theoretically at the heart of student life, it puts on events, it deals with appeals and most importantly in my opinion it represents you, the student. Where has this sense of responsibility gone? You may be wondering why I am criticising the union, well in my defence I am not. My only concern is to improve the students union and to ensure that the union is made more accountable to each and every individual who studies at the City University. I want students to come to the union with new ideas, criticisms and general feedback so that the union is continually improving.
Nikhil has a very difficult twelve months coming up but as I said before I wish him the best of luck, let’s hope that he can be the catalyst for change.
