The 'Art of Living' Society is affiliated to the Art of Living Foundation, an international non-profit, educational and humanitarian organisation in special consultative status with the UN and active in 149 countries across the globe. Its simple yet powerful breathing and meditation programmes have been hugely successful across the world from post-9/11 America, post-war Iraq, Afghanistan and Bosnia to areas hit by the Dresden floods, Madrid bombings and the recent Tsunami. Studies have proven that these techniques have beneficial effects on the physiology, nervous system, endocrine system and the immune system.
The City University 'Art of Living' society cuts across all ages, religions and cultures, and aims at bringing these courses and this knowledge to student life, helping to foster a friendly, healthy and stress-free working environment for everyone at the University.
The Silver Jubilee (see online), as well as being a celebration, has a very important role. It will be the launch for the largest global humanitarian project ever undertaken - THE CAPITAL FUND.
The Art of Living Foundation will establish the Capital Fund which will be used to support various humanitarian services and social programs worldwide. This centralised Fund will enable the Art of Living Foundation to develop long-term strategies that will help extend its reach into the community and to respond immediately to global disasters and situations as needed.
From experience with the South Asian tsunami, AoLF found that, although £35million was raised, it came in slowly and many more people could have been saved by having this money available immediately. Through the establishment of the Fund, the Foundation will be able to strategically allocate resources to help support and further its voluntary-based engagements within the community.
Here are just a few examples of the many areas where our volunteers have reached out their hands in service...
Tsunami Disaster (From 2004), South Russia, Beslan Terror Attack (Sept 2004), Iraq (From 2003), Afghanistan (From 2003), New York City 9/11 Attack USA (September 2001), Adopted 25000 villages across 25 states in India, Ireland Youth Projects in collaboration with Peace Child Ireland, Prison SMART UK - to name but a few...
So the CAPITAL FUND is YOUR OPPORTUNITY to contribute to a fund that will make a long term difference to our world.

As well as regular Art of Living courses, the society will hold:
The scope for the Art of Living society is immense. Its backbone would be the courses and these would be supplemented throughout the year by fundraisers, socials, discussions and spiritual stress-elimination workshops open to ALL staff and students, some of these being held jointly with other UK universities. The most important thing is that this society will be all-inclusive, open to people of all ages and of all academic, cultural and religious backgrounds.
Renowned for improving well-being, the courses have already been hugely successful in the US, being run at over 70 campuses including Harvard and MIT as well as at institutions from NASA to the World Bank.
Due to the limited capacity of most venues, we cannot guarantee places to all those that reply. Once the course is full, additional applicants will be informed and put on a waiting list.
